FAQ

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

KB (kilobyte) is an SI unit where 1 KB = 1000 bytes. KiB (kibibyte) is an IEC unit where 1 KiB = 1024 bytes. Different operating systems and software use different conventions.

Why are there two unit systems?

Computers operate on powers of 2 (1024) but SI units use powers of 10 (1000). IEC units (KiB/MiB/GiB) were introduced to avoid confusion.
